Music fans celebrated as MTV World Stage returned to Malaysia, where their favourite bands performed with flawless audio provided by The Show Company through the use of Sennheiser wireless systems. Held at i-City, at Malaysia’s Shah Alam on Sunday 24 July, the live concert thrilled fans for the third year running. A one-hour version of MTV World Stage Live in Malaysia 2011 will be broadcast worldwide on MTV channels to over 500 million households in more than 150 countries later this year. It is the first MTV World Stage ever to be shot and broadcast in 3-D.

Managing the concert’s sound requirements was no easy task, especially with an audience of over 15,000 fans expecting uncompromising sound. The sound supplier The Show Company was well-equipped to face this challenge head-on, being an integrated production and gear hire company based in Singapore that specialises in large arena production work.

Many of the bands used Sennheiser equipment: Malaysian band Pop Shuvit and alternative rock Billboard chart-toppers NeonTrees both wowed the crowd utilising Sennheiser SKM 5235 microphones; Korean pop sensation Beast used the SKM 5235 and ew 300 G3 IEM wireless monitors. Multiple MTV award-winning Thirty Seconds To Mars relied on the ew 300 G3 IEM monitors too.

“The audio quality is really crystal clear,” said Jon Sim, Project Manager at The Show Company. “The microphones are of rugged construction and the RF is very reliable.” He observed that Sennheiser equipment performed well, passing with flying colours. The microphones worked flawlessly in a challenging set-up where one of the acts had to start off the set right at the FOH desk, even though the antennas were located next to the stage.

Shows that take place outdoors and in a remote location can be a testing environment for sound equipment, noted Joseph Gan, Director (Head of Sound) at The Show Company. “The location this year was quite remote, requiring more infrastructural work than usual. Being an outdoor gig, weather was a big issue as well. That said, the team and the equipment pulled off the show with high precision. As usual, the sound was fantastic!”

Sennheiser and The Show Company provided the MTV World Stage Concert with eight channels of EM 3732 receivers with SKM 5200 transmitters and MD 5235 microphone heads; 14 channels of EM 2050 receivers with SK 2000 bodypacks and HSP 4 headset microphones; and 16 channels of ew 300 G3 IEM wireless monitoring.

Commenting on MTV World Stage, Vince Tan, Sennheiser’s Asia and Australia Relations Manager, said: “Technically, it was a tremendous experience for Sennheiser to play a part in the success staging of this live show, delivering cutting-edge microphone technology. We are happy to have helped thousands of fans make some beautiful musical memories.”
